After talking with many people… and arguing with others… about gay marriage, I don’t believe American government will ever make any solid movements to federally ban or allow gay marriage.  Political parties, liberal and conservative wont ever make or change any federal policies because then they won’t be able to say they will make those changes come the next election.  The same thing is true about abortion.

In the ‘08 election, McCain rallied a lot of support on the fact that he would overturn Roe v. Wade.  First off, I will bet plenty of money he never would have done it.  Secondly, even if Roe v. Wade was overturned, how does that put an end to abortion?  All that does is put the legislative burden on individual states.  Again, what does that do?  If Sally wants an abortion but her state banned abortion, she hops in her Honda and drives to the next state over.  What if all states banned abortion?  Yes, numbers would probably significantly drop in the number of abortions, but what else would happen?  There would be exponentially more babies to take a lot more tax dollars in government aid programs, a decent number of those babies would probably die anyway from malnutrition or another result of neglect, the population would continue to skyrocket and overpopulation problems would become more and more dramatic, and what is the worst possible result, more people go back to excessively inhumane ways to terminate their pregnancy i.e. coat hanger, baseball bat.  That’s not what I want to talk about though.  I want to talk about gay marriage.

The bible says nothing against gay marriage specifically.  The bible condemns many homosexual acts but never once addresses a homosexual marriage.  Romans 1:27 says “27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.”  The bible never defines what “indecent” means.  I can agree that agree that leaving cheating on your wife with a man OR WHOEVER is indecent and perverted.  The thing is, would anyone ever describe a loving, committed, monogamous, supporting relationship indecent?  perverted?  Not only does the bible never condemn same sex marriage, it never mentions it at all.

Something else that is never mentioned is how being gay/lesbian not a choice.  Why would anyone choose to be gay?  When I say that, I mean why would anyone CHOOSE to be part of an oppressed, abused, outcasted, misunderstood minority of people?  The bible never says that men are consistently created to to be attracted to women.  Sure, that had to be true with Adam and Eve because Adam and Eve’s purpose was to mate and begin to populate the earth.  The earth is plenty populated now.  If being gay were a choice, why have so many scientific attempts to change one’s sexual orientation including electric shock treatments, aversion therapy, castration, breast amputation, frontal lobotomies, and others all failed?  What is there to change really?  What is so different between a hetero and homosexual couple?  Both long for loving, committed, supportive, and long lasting relationships with species of their same kind.  That is unnatural?  immoral?  The bible doesn’t say that is unnatural.  The bible says that gay lust and promiscuity are sinful and immortal but it also says that for heterosexual lust and promiscuity too!

This is an important thing to read coming from Indiana after Bloomington city council passed something to ban hiring discrimination based on sexual preference.

“In other words, Bloomington’s conservative Christians came to realize that there are at least three sides to the subject of homosexuality: the civil rights factor, the human factor, and the theological factor. Before the Charles visit there was a tendency to lump all three together and consider them as one and the same. Afterward, many conservatives realized they could show compassion in recognizing the human side and could support the antidiscrimination ordinance without compromising their theological position (viz., that the Bible condemns homosexuality as sin from which persons need to be redeemed). Again and again, Charles hammered home the point that it is not necessary to oppose gay civil rights on Christian principle; but it is necessary to show love and acceptance, because the church has the responsibility of welcoming and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with all people. Describing himself as a charismatic, Charles told his audience that he doesn’t hesitate to take homosexual friends (“even in drag”) to his church and that fellow Assembly of God members warmly accept them. “Any changing of lives is up to God,” he stressed. “Your part as Christians is to give a positive, radiant witness.”

This hits my point home perfectly.  From a Christian point of view, homosexuality is a sin.  You’re denying someone’s right to marry who they want based on a sin.  If someone wanted to take away your right to marry who you want because you speed when you drive, would that be fair?  Would you stand for that?  I don’t think so.  It is the government’s job to govern American citizens.  It is not America’s citizen’s responsibility to follow Christian values and beliefs.  Let the government do it’s job, and let the church do its job (spreading the word and love of God, not make laws).  Oppressing, discriminating, hating are not examples of God’s love.
